What is a love poem? Is it necessarily a poem
about romantic love? About romance? Marriage and commitment? Or
is a love poem something else entirely?
In a recent short story I wrote,
a writer is told by a young critic that he doesn't understand
love. "It's neither noble nor eternal, as you would have your
audience believe," she says.
"Nobody understands love," the
writer admits. "It seems to be Universal. Timeless. Yet, it's
also very individual, filtered by our own lives and
expectations. I don't understand love, and can't understand
love, because it's a different thing for each of
us."
These love poems are Universal.

Friendship isn't always easily described. The
Eskimos, they say, have a hundred different words for snow.
Unfortunately, the English language isn't quite as innovative,
though it has vast opportunities to differentiate meaning.
Certainly, Love is one of those opportunities. And so, too, is
Friendship.
Instead of different words, however, we're stuck with simple
adjectives. Close friend. Best friend. Childhood friend.
Intimate friend. Trusted friend. Beloved friend. But whether
you use adjectives or different words, few could deny the
nearly infinite meaning in such a simple word.
Friends are special people. We can't pick our family, and we're
sorely limited in the number of them at any rate. Society and
mores (and often our own conscience) dictate we select a single
mate. But our friends can be as diverse and infinite as the
adjectives we choose. Our friends, in a very real sense,
reflect the choices we make in life.

teenager is often very different than life as either a
child or an adult. It is a turbulent time, with different
obstacles to face, and often it seems as if there are
many, many more of them. These poems are by teens, about
teens, and about Life as they see
it.

If Love is a Universal emotion, then the
pain it often causes (some might say inevitably causes)
is equally Universal. Yet, that only begs the more
important question: Why do sad poems and stories of
emotional pain bring each of us a strange kind of
pleasure

In some sense, it could be argued a category
about Life is a vague, nebulous cop-out. Any poem ever penned
by Man or Woman would surely gain ready admittance here. All
poems, almost by definition, are about Life.
But don't, for a moment, think
that makes this category any less important. On the contrary,
if the poems and topics you are about to explore are about
Life, then they are also about you.
No one person can ever experience
all that life has to offer. It is only through sharing -
experiences, feelings, insights - that we can hope to grow
beyond our own meager lifetime. Are you ready to grow
